Cowan Centre Expands Youth Sports Access - 28 Aug 26

Kitchener · August 28, 2026

[music] >> Facilities like the Cowan Recreation Center at RBJ Schlegel Park [music] are really an integral part of the quality of life for residents in the city of Kitchener. We believe that when you invest in young people and in fact people of all ages, you ultimately lead to a higher quality of life for them. It also allows us to work with community sport organizations. We know that sport has a significant impact on people in terms of their lives, building [music] leadership skills, coordination skills, ability to work with other people. >> I'm Danielle Byers. I'm the manager of club and community development at Kitchener Soccer [music] Club and Kitchener TFC. The Cowan Recreation Center really means for us an opportunity to give children a chance to develop, [music] develop their soccer skills, but also help them develop as people through sport. The demand for our programs is is growing, it's getting really high. [music] For indoor programming, we had a wait list last year of just about 300 athletes. [music] We expect with the opening of the Cowan Recreation Center that we'd be able to move, hopefully the majority of those children [music] that are currently on our wait list every year for indoor soccer off of the wait list and give them an opportunity to play. >> Hi, I'm Paul Pavan and I'm the president of the Kitchener-Waterloo [music] Predators Volleyball Club. This facility really opens things up for [music] us and allows us to engage far more kids into the game of volleyball. You know, we can increase programming about 33% [music] across the board. This opens up a whole new world for us. A lot of times, we end up in smaller gyms and [music] are limited as to what we can do and we make do and we have for a number of years. Having the opportunity to practice on world-class courts such as this facility will have is something we don't experience every time we go to practice. >> My name's Tyson McDonald's. I'm the senior development coach with the Regional Waterloo Swim Club. The current facilities were completely maxed out space. So, having facility like Cowan come on, the aquatic [music] center, it's going to be able to eliminate that gap and allow for more children within the city and the region to be able to be part of the swim team. This facility is going to open up the doors to endless opportunities. More kids in the pool, more kids [music] being active in sports, allowing everyone that wants to get involved to be involved in [music] this sport. >> We're excited because we know for young people it allow them to build their skills, [music] to you know, learn things like teamwork and collaboration. And we also know that for our sporting organizations it allow [music] them to grow, for us to support them better in terms of the need, and to welcome people from across Ontario and across Canada to our community, which will have economic benefits overall.
